When Simon was about a year and a half old he went with his parents on his first holiday to Norway. They stayed with Peter and Ulla Jackson, Mike’s friends from his national service days in the north of Norway with the The Friends’ Ambulance Unit. Peter had met Ulla in Norway, married her and stayed there, working for the British Council in Oslo. They had a summer hut out on Hvaler where Simon stayed that summer of 1960.

Grampa Lee took a whole series of farewell scenes. This is typical. Dad (Mike) Simon and Mum (Judy) are departing Dittisham for Lambeg in Dad’s van. Dad had always preferred a van. Vans were better value for money than cars back then and more practical as you could get a load of clobber in the back, including a pram.
